SANTO DOMINGO.- The Conference of the Dominican Episcopate (CED) called on society, the judicial system and families to seek solutions to violence through dialogue and understanding, in a context marked by the death of dozens of alleged criminals in alleged exchange of fire with National Police officers.
The pronunciation took place during the 44th National Meeting of Pastoral, organized by the CED, through its National Institute of Pastoral Affairs (INP), with the participation of bishops and 350 pastoral agents from all the dioceses of the country, in the Casa María de la Altagracia.
Monsignor Carlos Tomás Morel Diplán, co-adjutor of Santo Domingo and vice-president of the CED, highlighted the shared responsibility of families, the State, schools and society in the prevention of violence, according to a communiqué of the Catholic entity.
«It is not only evangelizing, but also our mission as Christians, but as citizens, it is helping society to be better,» said the prelate, who advocated the participation of all in the construction of a better country, without individualism or particular interests, and with a firm commitment to the common good.
In the words of welcome, the President of the CED and Bishop of San Francisco de Macorís, Monsignor Ramón Alfredo de la Cruz Baldera, addressed a message to the participants by letter, due to his attendance at a meeting of presidents of episcopal conferences in Rome.
During the homily of the Eucharist, Morel Diplán also asked for prayers for Panama, following the strong earthquake on Friday, and called for the maintenance of spiritual solidarity with Venezuela and Colombia, also affected by earthquakes this year.
