Hundreds of Venezuelans left this Saturday in a caravan in Caracas, in motorcycles and bicycles, to raise funds and contribute to the early detection of breast cancer with the financing of mammograms and medical consultations to women who cannot afford these studies.
The event, organized by the initiative La Ruta de Lola in conjunction with the NGO SenoSalud, went through various streets in the eastern part of the Venezuelan capital, and included other activities such as medical research.
«I am very happy to be here and to help, to participate in this beautiful work that these girls do to raise funds for this disease that is so strong,» he told EWE Ida Modano about the activity that he already turns five.
Catherine Ciardiello explained to EFE that The Lola Route works for breast cancer prevention, gathering the «funds necessary» for women to be able to do their studies to detect the disease in time.
«We hope that this will be repeated year after year to generate awareness, because the most important thing is to prevent,» he said.
The Lola Route, according to its website, was born in 2021 and has managed to finance 1,500 mammograms.
According to NGOs such as the Venezuela Anticancer Society (SAV) and SenoSalud, breast cancer is considered the main cause of oncological death among women in the country.
The Venezuelan NGO Senosayuda notes on its website that approximately 19 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed every day, of which 15 are already in advanced stages.
«Seven people die daily from this disease,» he adds.
In July last year, the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC) announced that it is working on a project that seeks to improve the treatment of breast cancer and reduce the adverse effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
