The Avatar universe expands its LGBTQ + representation with the arrival of Avatar: Seven Havens. The new animated series presented Jae, a master air who accompanies the protagonist Pavi and her sister Nisha, along with Datu, her boyfriend, in a scene that quickly began to circulate on social networks.
The first episodes of the production were released on Friday, October 9, in Paramount +, and one of its most commented moments was precisely the encounter between the two characters. When Datu sees Jae, he runs to him to embrace him with affection. Before he says goodbye, Jae gives him a kiss on his cheek, making clear the sentimental relationship between the two.
The sequence caused numerous reactions among the franchise followers, who celebrated that history explicitly incorporated a male gay couple. Some users highlighted the nature with which romance is presented, while others expressed their emotion to see characters with which they can identify themselves within this fantastic universe.
LGBT in Avatar
Although the franchise had already included LGBTQ + characters, the arrival of Jae and Datu represents a new step in the diversity of their stories. Among the best known examples are Korra and Asami, whose sentimental relationship is part of the canon of The Legend of Korra.
In addition, this year, there were signs of Zuko's bisexuality in the film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, which fueled the followers' conversations about the sexual diversity of the saga characters.
Some fans consider that Jae and Datu could be the first openly gay male characters confirmed within the franchise. His appearance has also generated positive comments among those who have long been waiting for a broader representation of the relationships between same-sex characters.
