Prince William of Wales called on people to approach their family and friends on Saturday to ask them how they feel and to offer them emotional support, warning that a conversation can make a difference in the prevention of suicide.
On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the heir to the British Crown shared a message on his social networks in which he recalled that about 20 people die of suicide every day in the United Kingdom.
«Behind every number there is a person, a family and people who love them. If you're worried about someone, contact him. Ask him how he is. Listen. Let him know he's not alone. A conversation can change everything,» he said in a post signed with the initial «W,» corresponding to his English name, William.
A message to listen without judging
Along with the message, Guillermo spread a video that collects phone conversations between people and their loved ones. In the scenes, participants express concern, offer company and open spaces to talk about difficult situations.
In one of the calls, a person asks his or her interlocutor if he or she wants to talk about something that concerns him or her. In another, one voice reminds a loved one that is available to listen to him when he needs to.
In an interview published by the British newspaper Daily Express, the prince said that it is not always possible to know the difficulties other people face.
He also stressed that spending time asking how someone is, listening without judging and showing genuine interest can have a significant impact on those who need support.
Prevention of suicide
The message is part of the mental health initiatives promoted by Guillermo through his philanthropic work, including a national suicide prevention network driven by his foundation.
With his statements, the prince seeks to strengthen the importance of personal relations and communication as part of the accompaniment to those who go through moments of emotional vulnerability.
