The Portuguese football federation has suspended Cristiano Ronaldo and has initiated a disciplinary procedure against the player for leaving the team.
The federation stated on Saturday in a statement that the case has been referred to its disciplinary investigation committee and that its findings will remain confidential until a final opinion is reached.
Ronaldo, 41, left the Portuguese team during FIFA due to a dispute with the new selector, Jorge Jesus, for the lack of minutes of play.
In the games where Ronaldo was an alternate without playing or being absent, Portugal won all three and his substitute, Gonçalo Ramos, took advantage of his opportunity to mark three goals.
Ronaldo closed the international stop with an extensive message for his 679 million followers in Instagram, where he asked the Portuguese selector to recognize the mistake of asking him to warm up in the band and then not send him to the field against Norway. Jesus did not recognize any mistakes.
The star wrote that she was waiting for a suspension according to the Federation's rules, but she promised her fans that "we will have one or more farewell parties.".
Ronaldo could face severe punishment for leaving the concentration. The disciplinary regulations of the federation provide that any player who “abandons or does not present himself” without justification to a training session, party or activity of the national selections “shall be punished with a suspension of one to six months,” in addition to a fine.
Ronaldo did inform the federation of his decision to leave, but it was not clear whether that decision would be considered justified in accordance with the regulations.
“I already apologized, but I know that actions must have consequences. Anyone in the football world, like me, knows that, regardless of the position of each person, the rules are the same for everyone,” Ronaldo wrote in his statement this week.
