The deputy Carmen Williams condemned the arrest of her colleague Millys Johanna Martínez Morillo, representative of the Elías Píña province, and called on the competent authorities to act in strict compliance with the Constitution of the Dominican Republic and due process.
Through a communiqué issued on Sunday, 11 October 2026, Williams expressed concern about the detention of the legislator and recalled the provisions of article 86 of the Dominican Constitution, concerning parliamentary immunity.
The congressman held that the constitutional prerogatives of the deputies must be respected, while noting that the lifting of parliamentary immunity is the responsibility of the Chamber of Deputies, in accordance with the procedure set out in the Magna Charter.
Williams also called for the case to be handled seriously, transparently and with respect to the institutional structure of the National Congress, in order to avoid actions that could violate democratic principles and balance between the powers of the State.
The legislator also expressed her solidarity with Martínez, his family and the inhabitants of the Elías Píña province, expressing her confidence that justice and respect for the constitutional order will prevail.
The pronouncement takes place after Millys Johanna Martínez Morillo was arrested on Sunday by National Police officers, following an incident with a colonel of that institution during the patronal parties of the border province.
