The Minister of the Interior and Police, Faride Raz, announced that the third phase of the new police patrol model will arrive in Santiago next day 20, as part of the measures aimed at strengthening citizen security and moving forward in the reform of the National Police.
The official provided the information on Saturday during the announcement of a comprehensive intervention against crime in the Cienfuegos sector of the Santiago Oeste municipal district.
Raful explained that the transformation of the institution requires a more rigorous preparation of the agents, with academic training, training, police doctrine, monitoring and permanent evaluations to ensure actions that are in conformity with the law and respect for citizens' rights.
He also highlighted the use of body cameras as a monitoring mechanism, noting that recordings have identified situations in which some agents deviate from established procedures.
The Minister said that the reform is not only about incorporating teams, but also about strengthening the discipline, transparency and operational capacity of the police.
Santiago will be the stage of the new patrol phase
Raful indicated that Santiago has served as a pilot scenario for the implementation of the new patrol model, which seeks to distribute police officers and resources according to the needs of each territory.
He also reported that the authorities are working to strengthen the National Police's vehicle flotilla and mentioned the acquisition of more than 700 units, although he did not provide details on its characteristics or the delivery schedule.
Intervention in Cienfuegos
As part of the actions planned in Cienfuegos, the authorities will prioritize targeted patrols, the prevention of domestic violence, action against gangs and initiatives aimed at restoring citizen coexistence.
The Minister noted that security requires coordination between State institutions and communities, through community talks, follow-up to risk situations and other preventive measures.
During the activity, the Director General of the National Police, Major General Ernesto Rafael Rodríguez García, said that he will not allow crime to go forward and called on the people wanted by the authorities to give themselves up voluntarily to respond to the justice system.
Monitoring of security statistics
Raful also referred to the monitoring of homicide statistics as part of the security policy assessment and reiterated the importance of strengthening transparency and institutional coordination.
The intervention in Cienfuegos seeks to combine the police presence with preventive actions and community work to address the security problems identified in that area of Santiago.
